Whether you’re visiting Amsterdam for the first time or you’ve already been there plenty of times, some of these tips are sure to help you. So why exactly you should visit Amsterdam?
A few weeks ago I spent a lovely weekend in Amsterdam. In fact, I’d love to visit it again in summer and then again during the autumn months just to feel the city vibes. But without further ado, let me share with you my thoughts why you should visit Amsterdam and give you the best Amsterdam tips for your next city break, where to stay, where to shop and how to fall in love with the city.
What to visit in Amsterdam
Apart from visiting all the traditional museums and art galleries that Amsterdam has to offer (and it’s about 60 of them), get out and explore the city of canals. There are so many hidden places worth visiting. Discover the dark side of the city and its secrets - head to the famous Red Light District, pop into Sexmuseum Amsterdam, Museum of Prostitution, Torture Museum or Erotic Museum. Sounds rather thrilling, right?
Why to visit Amsterdam
Amsterdam is just adorable and absolutely worth visiting, not mentioning that it’s one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Historic architecture, houseboats, the Red Light District, famous canals, you name it. There are dozens of things to do in Amsterdam, but let’s start with the very basic ones.
Where to stay in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is one of those places where you need to book a room in advance if you want to live in the city centre. You’ve probably seen my post about one of the most fashionable and beautiful Amsterdam hotels I’ve stayed this time Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. If you haven’t, be sure to check it out. Astounding aesthetics and interiors, helpful, smiling and attentive staff that literally would go out of their way to make every answer a yes. It was truly perfect.
Where to shop in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has many famous shopping streets that are worth visiting. Whether you're on the hunt for a Dutch cheese or a gourmet lunch, unique Dutch design pieces or for antique collectables, Amsterdam has something for everyone. Jordaan's Lindengracht Market, De Pijp's Albert Cuypmarkt, the floating Bloemenmarkt selling everything from tulip bulbs to fabrics, souvenirs and Christmas decor, I bet you’ll be amazed. It's a truly colourful experience.
For the premium luxury brands, individual boutiques, including Dutch design homewares and fashion, head to Pieter Cornelisz Hooftstraat, where the main shops are. Here you’ll find everything from luxury Chanel and Hermes boutiques to Tiffany and Chopard.
To be honest, it was my first time in Amsterdam, and it was absolutely superb from start to finish. For those of you looking for a weekend away, look no further. You will fall in love with the city of canals.
